Volvo V50 S 2.0D Sportswagon Diesel Estate...

Volvo is one of the great estate makers - it's been doing it for decades. They've always been practical, but those launched in more recent years - such as the Volvo V50 - have been increasingly stylish too. The V50 is essentially the estate version of the S40 saloon and is a good value alternative to the likes of the BMW 3-Series Touring with good levels of standard equipment, an elegant interior and strong build quality. There are also low emissions DRIVe versions available which offer low running costs thanks to cheaper road tax and impressive fuel economy while the R Design models get a sporty look inside and out

The headline-grabbing engine in the V50 range is not the turbocharged T5 shared with the Ford Focus ST, but the low-emission 2.0 litre diesel in DRIVe models. The 2.0D with 136bhp will be quick enough for most buyers' needs, yet should achieve close to 50mpg. The hot diesel option is the 180bhp D5 which has immense pulling power from low down and is great for motorway driving and overtakes effortlessly too. It manages the 0-62mph sprint in 8.0 seconds while still returning 45mpg.

Equipment is good across the whole range, as is safety, with the V50 S 2.0D Sportswagon scoring a - then - maximum four-star Euro NCAP rating. The cabin looks good in the usual Volvo big-button tradition, but build quality could be better on early versions.
