Saab 9-5 1.9 TDi Vector Review

The first Saab 9-5 estate carved out a niche as a large, practical yet affordable load carrier and this newer version continues that role.

It's based on the original - but there have been some significant alterations including a reworked front end, an upgraded interior plus the handling has been revised. There isn't a wide choice of engines, but all are turbocharged and consequently deliver strong performance. Saab doesn't try to hide the fact that the 9-5 isn't as modern as many of its premium rivals, but as a new buy it's priced to undercut them by several thousand pounds. And if you're looking at second hand cars you could end up with a real bargain.

Surprisingly there's only one diesel engine available – The Saab 9-5 1.9-litre TDi that's also used in the Saab 9-3 range. It delivers 150bhp and good pulling power from low down. It's economical (42mpg on average) and 0-60mph takes a respectable 10.4 seconds. This model comes with a five-speed manual gearbox while a five-speed automatic is optional.
