Saab Diesel Estates / MPVs Review
Looking to make a new or used Saab diesel your next motor vehicle?
Saab was originally a division of Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget ( Swedish Airplane Limited) which had been created in 1937 for the express purpose of building aircraft for the Swedish Air Force as Europe moved closer to war. When the war drew to a close and the market for fighter planes evaporated the Company looked for new markets in which to diversify. As we all know, they decided to move into car manufacturing.
In 1969 Saab merged with Scania-Vabis AB to form the well known company Saab-Scania AB, rapidly moving into a prominent market position with the '99' range, which included the combi coupe model; a body style that quickly became synonymous with Saab. Owing much of it's success to this model, the millionth Saab was produced in 1976.
By 1978 the Saab 900 series had been developed and nearly 1 million would be produced and was followed in 1985 by the 9000 version, and then in 1986 by a popular convertible version, which made up nearly 20% of all 900 sales.
In 1989 Saab was restructured into an independent company with General Motors holding a 50% stake as did Investor AB.. The 9.3 and 9.5 models were produced in 1997 to mark the 50th anniversary of Saab as a car manufacturer, with a wagon variant being introduced in 1999.
There followed some lean years for Saab which ended with General Motors announcing, in 2009 that the brand would be eliminated by the end of the year, unless a buyer was found. Happily in January 2010 Spyker agreed a deal with GM to purchase Saab and to move the brand forward through the 21st century.
The present range of Saab vehicles include the 9.3, 9.3X and the 9.5, with a 2nd generation 9.5 planned for a spring release in 2010. The 9.4X is planned for release in the autumn of 2010 with the Saab 93 9A new model with classic Saab nameplate) planned for 2013.
