Renault Grand Scenic 1.9 DCi Diesel Estate...

The engine has a broad spread of power, and feels lively as a result. It's refined, too, and Expression trim includes good equipment, such as air-conditioning, four electric windows, an aux-in socket and fog lights. However, the lack of standard alloy wheels may put you off, and the diesel engine hums a little at motorway speeds. It is a good combination of performance and practicality at a good price.

Highlights of the engine range are a super-smooth 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine that belies its capacity with decent power, but not to the detriment of economy. The newest 2.0-litre diesel also offers excellent performance and refinement. Other engines are adequate, if nothing special.

The diesels are very popular and it's easy to see why - the 1.5 dCi is impressive considering the cars size and provides good in-gear performance while returning a healthy 52mpg.

There's also a 1.9 dCi which initially had 120bhp but was replaced by a 130bhp variant. In addition, from 2006 there is a 2.0-litre dCi engine with 150bhp. This is a superb engine with plenty of pull from low revs and a smooth and refined nature.

Key Features of the Renault Grand Scenic 1.9 DCi Diesel Estate

Ride & Handling
4 out of 5 stars

If the Ford S-Max is the driver’s choice and the Citroën C4 Grand Picasso the comfort choice, the Grand Scenic sits somewhere in between. It errs closer to the Ford - there’s little body roll through corners. However, the steering feels artificial and some may find the ride a wee bit firm at times – especially in diesel models.

Refinement
4 out of 5 stars

You won't find a more refined car in the MPV class. There's a whisper of wind noise on the motorway, but it's less than you get in most other MPVs and road noise is really well isolated. The engines are pretty hushed, too, especially the excellent 1.4-litre turbo.
